This pair of models represents the LMG 08/15 "Spandau" machineguns used as fixed, forward-aimed, synchronized firing weapons fit to the famous Fokker Dr.I Triplane, Fokker D.VII and other German fighters of World War I.
The models' features are thin and relatively fragile. Caution is recommended when removing supports, especially the support connected to the sighting ring, and during handling.
Features: the models' details and markings match surviving Spandau LMG 08/15 serial number 8129, manufactured in 1917 at the Spandau Arsenal, Berlin.
- accurate cooling jacket vent ports
- spent shell ejection tube at the forward end of the bottom of the receiver
- rectangular crash pad at the rear of the receiver. The real crash pads were made of leather and protected the pilot's face in the event of a crash or hard landing
- detailed ammunition feeder ports and tray
- detailed charging handle
- flash suppressor
This weapon does not feature the long-handled cocking device fit to the right side of the receiver that became favored in 1918.
These models were scaled from measurements taken from a real LMG 08/15. Therefore, the models may be differently shaped and sized than the parts in your plastic airplane kit. Some adjustment to your plastic airplane kit's parts may be necessary for best fit.
Officially known as the "LMG 08/15", this weapon was manufactured by the German government's Spandau Arsenal located in the western-most borough of Berlin, Germany. It is the arsenal's stamped name on the gun from which the gun's "Spandau" nickname comes.
The LMG 08/15 machinegun was a lighter-weight refinement of the earlier "Infantrie Machinen Gewehr 08" (IMG 08), but intended specifically for use in aircraft. The IMG 08 was a development of the "Machinen Gewehr 08" (MG 08) which entered German military service in 1908. The MG 08 was a development of the Maxim 08 first accepted by the German military in 1898.
The LMG 08/15 weighs 26 pounds (11.8 kg), less than half the weight of its 57 pound (25.9 kg) predecessor.
