This model seat represents the Warren-McArthur 243B-AS1 seat fit to most P-51D and P-51K Mustangs produced at North American Aviation's Inglewood and Dallas plants.  The model includes the inclined armored plate and headrest.  Please see assembly guide and painting suggestion rendering.

Aviation historians report early A-36, P-51A, P-51B and P-51C Mustangs were typically fit with the Schick-Johnson S91-53074 seat when built.  The Schick-Johnson seat was made of wood and was differently shaped than the metal Warren-McArthur seat.  Some of these early P-51 Mustangs had their Schick-Johnson seats replaced with metal Warren-McArthur seats in the field.

P-51D-5NA, P-51D-10NA, early P-51D-15NA and P-51K Mustangs were fit with the metal Warren-McArthur 243B-AS1 represented by this 3D model seat.

Late P-51D-15NA models and all P-51D-20NA models were fit with metal Schick-Johnson 95-100 seats.  P-51D-25NA and later models reverted back to seats made by Warren-McArthur.

This model is an original 3D design based on authoritative 2D references.  The model is not a 3D-printed copy of any plastic or resin kit's parts.  Therefore, it may be sized, shaped and detailed differently than the parts in your kit.  Depending on which kit you have, some adjustment to your kit's parts may be needed for best fit.

Note to Airfix kit owners: the Airfix kit's seat is a kind of hybrid P-51B seat and P-51D seat, not accurate for either plane.  The Airfix kit's armored plate is too vertical, which leaves a big gap between the top of the plate and the radios and fuselage fuel tank.  It should incline further to the rear.  When installing the 3D-printed armored plate, lean it back further so that it is inclined to the rear approximately 18 degrees.

Caution is recommended when cutting away the support tray and when handling these parts.  The seat back and seat pan are very thin.

These parts are made of acrylic plastic.  Acrylic plastic does not behave like injection-molded polystyrene plastic or other resins.  Glues for polystyrene plastic, like "Testors Liquid Cement" or tube cement, will not work with acrylic plastic.  Cyanoacrylate (CA) "super glue" is recommended.
