This model represents the large sponson fit to the port side of some Korean War-era Essex-class aircraft carriers (straight-deck ships).  This sponson supported a boat and aircraft crane (not included).  It was located just aft of the midships aircraft elevator.  The top of the real sponson was fit flush with the hangar deck.

Some Essex-class ships, those with the aft aircraft elevator moved outboard, had a slightly differently shaped sponson fit to the starboard side.  A starboard side crane sponson is available separately.

This product was scaled from official US Navy Booklet of General Plans drawings.  This model is designed to accurately represent features and scaled dimensions of the real ship.  It is NOT a 3D-printed copy of any plastic or resin kit's parts and therefore may be sized and shaped differently than the kit parts it is intended to replace.  Some adjustment of your plastic kit's parts may be necessary for best fit.
