Recommended to help build a 1950s through early 1960s-era aircraft carrier of the Essex-class, Midway-class, Forrestal-class, Kitty Hawk-class, USS Enterprise CVAN-65 or USS John F. Kennedy CVA-67.
This set of models represents the CW-205/SPN-8 Radar Dome fit to US Navy aircraft carriers in service throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. The radar dome ("radome") covered the antenna of the AN/SPN-8 radar which was used to help aircraft land safely aboard ship. The radome provided weather protection to the radar's antenna.
The AN/SPN-8 radar was an X-Band shipboard carrier-controlled approach system produced by the Bendix Corporation. It was used to guide landing aircraft from a position as far as 6 nautical miles from the aircraft carrier to a position as close as 200 feet from touchdown.
The antenna, known as the AS-477/SPN-8, was a truncated paraboloid fed by a feed horn. The antenna was covered by a cylindrical radar dome and swiveled back and forth in a sector of 100 degrees in azimuth with 3 oscillations per second.
The model is based on drawings from declassified "Military Standardization Handbook United States Radar Equipment Manual" TM 11-487C-1, p. 1176ff, dated 15 September 1965.
Model dome dimensions:
- Diameter = 3.15 mm
- Height = 3.6 mm
