Among naval historians, the US Navy 5"/38 caliber gun is considered the best intermediate-caliber, dual purpose naval gun of World War II.  Many of the these guns were enclosed within an armored gun shield forming a single-gun or twin-gun turret, called a "mount".  The mount was commanded by a "gun captain" whose head was exposed above the roof during operation.  To provide some protection to the gun captain, many mounts were fit with an armored hood.
