Scale: 1/96
Set includes 8 carronades with carriages (skeads).
These models represent the 1805-pattern 32-pounder carronades fit to early 19th Century Royal Navy warships such as the 74-gun ships of the line HMS Vanguard and HMS Bellona, as well as the 38-gun frigate HMS Diana. Diana carried 12 carronades on the quarterdeck and 2 carronades on the forecastle. Some frigates, like the real HMS Surprise of 1796 carried 24 of these weapons while in Royal Navy service, all on the gun deck. But the replica ship used in the movie "Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World" carries twenty-eight 9-pounder cannons all on the gun deck.
Carronades were first developed in Scotland at the Carron ironworks from which they get their name. They were sometimes referred to as "smashers". Carronades were designed to be a very powerful, short-range, anti-ship and anti-personnel weapon.
Although there were minor variations among real cannons, these models' scaled dimensions and details match drawings of the Carron 1805-pattern gun by noted naval historian Brian Lavery as shown in "Anatomy of the Ship: The 74-gun ship Bellona".
The models feature King George monograms.
